What is a pole guy?

What is a pole guy?

A guy-wire, guy-line, guy-rope, or stay, also called simply a guy, is a tensioned cable designed to add stability to a free-standing structure. They are used commonly for ship masts, radio masts, wind turbines, utility poles, and tents. A thin vertical mast supported by guy wires is called a guyed mast.

How are guy wires installed?

The guy wires are attached to the upper half of each mast section with a guy ring and clamp. The ring and clamp are fitted to the mast before the antenna is attached. The mast ends of the guy wires are run through holes in the guy ring. The wire then is wrapped around itself at least six times (Figure 1).

Why is it called a guy wire?

The term Guy Wire, Guy Line, Guy Rope, or sometimes just Guy, derives from the French word “guie,” meaning guide or to guide found in use about 900 years ago. The Dutch, in the 1600’s, began the use of “guy” in terms that we are more familiar with today.

What is a down guy?

1. Down Guy- Consists. of a wire running from the attachment near the top of the pole to a rod and anchor installed in the ground.

What is a span guy?

Span guys are installed to span from the top of one structure or pole to the other and offset the strain from the line conductor. Span guys transmit horizontal force to another pole until an anchor guy can be used. SpanGuy is a linear feature and inherits attributes of Guy and Structure abstract classes.

What type of wire is used for overhead service?

Triplex wire is commonly used for overhead, single phase service and contains three individual wires twisted around each other. The two insulated conductors are called the “hot” legs of the service while the bare (uninsulated) wire is the neutral wire of the service.

How high does a service mast have to be?

The service mast should not be more than 3-feet vertically above the roof line; most utilities will require bracing or guy wires for additional support of any mast that is taller than 3-feet.

How long should guy wires be?

For light masts, guy wires are used for units that are approximately 19 feet high (and above). At 19 feet, a guy wire is used at the center of the pole to prevent swinging.

Why do the wires between the pile on towers hang?

Tension a force that exist in a string that is under the action of two forces in opposite direction. Thus a cable hanging on a pole is under tension and would be under more tension if the cables are to made tight which would make the cables to cut easily when little contraction or expansion occurs.

What is a head guy for line work?

pole used as a brace to a line pole. 3. Head Guy- A. guy wire running from the top of a pole to a point below the top of the adjacent pole.

What’s a down guy?

What is a storm guy?

Storm guys were placed for the express purpose of preventing “cascading failure” of open wire facilities due to ice, sleet or unbalanced loads, such as a falling tree limb, washout or other notoriously common happenstance.

How high does a Weatherhead have to be?

It shall be of length such that the weatherhead shall be a minimum of (18) inches above the roof if within four (4) feet from the edge of the roof, otherwise it shall be three (3) feet above the roof and/or twelve (12) feet minimum above ground level.

Is it cheaper to run power overhead or underground?

Overhead feeds use triplex aluminum wire that is much cheaper and less time-consuming to install than underground wiring, which can cost about $1.50 per foot for the materials alone. On a larger scale, utilities report that it often costs five times more to install underground power lines than overhead lines.

Can you touch a service drop?

This work is extremely dangerous; we recommend you contact a professional tree-trimming company to perform this work. Never attempt to move or handle a service drop. In the event of a downed power line resulting from high winds, falling trees, etc., call DTE to have the line de-energized and safely restrung.

What angle should guy wires be at?

45 degrees
Fortunately, the variables of guy wires are straightforward. The first thing to note is that guy wires should extend at an angle of 45 degrees. The pole being supported is erected at a straight 90 degrees, while the ground offers a flat, horizontal surface.
