What is the current regimen for post exposure prophylaxis?
The preferred PEP regimen for otherwise healthy adults and adolescents is tenofovir disoproxil fumarate (TDF) (300 mg) + emtricitibine (FTC) 200 mg) once daily PLUS raltegravir (RAL) (400 mg) twice daily or dolutegravir (DTG) (50 mg) once daily).
When should PEP be discontinued?
If PEP is prescribed after 72 hours and then discontinued after 28 days, the risk of viral rebound with that inadvertent interruption in ART is significant, as is the associated risk of developing resistance to ART; therefore, this Committee stresses that PEP should not be initiated later than 72 hours post exposure.
Is PEP for 28 days or 30 days?
PEP should be taken for 28 days. It is important to take all the doses, at the right time and in the right way, to give PEP the best chance of working. You might be given an additional two days’ drugs if you have been at risk of exposure to HIV in the last 48 hours of the course of PEP.

How effective is PEP after 30 hours?
Beyond this 36-72 hour period, it may be more difficult to prevent HIV infection. PEP should be initiated as soon as possible “hours, not days” and ideally within 24-36 hours. There is no evidence of PEP efficacy when initiated past 72 hours.
How long can PEP delay seroconversion?
As PEP works similar to medication used to manage HIV, PEP if unsuccessful can delay seroconversion. This is why testing a minimum of 4 weeks after PEP is required. Seroconversion can occur 1-3 weeks after the course ends.
Is NACO and NACP same?
National AIDS Control Programme Phase III (NACP III) was launched in July 2007 with the goal of Halting and Reversing the Epidemic by the end of project period in mid 2012. The National AIDS Control Organization (NACO) has initiated the process to start the next phase of the program.
Can I take PEP for two months?
Since people living with HIV take the very same medications that are prescribed for PEP for many years without significant safety issues, you should be fine with two or more PEP regimens.
Why should I take PEP for 28 days?
Post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) is the use of short-term antiretroviral therapy (ART) to reduce the risk of acquisition of HIV infection following exposure. Current guidelines recommend a 28-day course of ART within 36–72 hours of exposure to HIV.
Which test is best after PEP?
You need to visit your nurse or doctor for follow-up testing after you finish PEP. You’ll get another HIV test 4-6 weeks after you were first exposed to HIV, and then you’ll be tested again 3 months later. Depending on your situation, your doctor may recommend another HIV test 6 months later.
Has anyone seroconverted after PEP?
Overall, PEP HIV seroconversion was rare, however an association between PEP efficacy and regimen could not be determined. Among studies assessing two-drug regimens, PEP completion rates were significantly higher for TDF-based regimens (78.4%) compared to ZDV-based regimens (58.8%).
Can I take PEP for 26 days?
There is no data to support that taking PEP for any longer than 28 days is beneficial. In exceptional circumstances the course may be extended, but does require very specific criteria to be met and consultation with an HIV specialist.
