What is the ball on top of a newel post called?
A finial is a decorative piece at the top of a newel post. Finials are commonly found made of wood in the shape of a ball but can also be quite ornate and made of glass or metal.
How do you anchor a newel?
One is to use construction adhesive combined with screwing it to the floor. Pre-drill holes for the screws into the base of the newel, then secure it in place. Hide the screw holes with some decorative molding. Another way is to mount threaded inserts in the surface where you will mount the newel.

Standard Post Caps: Apply the adhesive liberally to the inside of the cap, and then place the cap firmly over the top of the post. Do not install solar of low voltage post caps with an adhesive, most require removing the post cap to replace batteries when needed, these caps should be mounted with removable screws.

The first method to install newel posts is to use a newel mounting plate. A steel plate is first screwed to the bottom of the post then the plate itself (with the attached post) is screwed into the floor.

Using a small hammer, carefully hit the underside of the newel cap, all the way round the newel post. This should loosen the cap enough so that you can remove it. If any glue is left on the top of the newel post, clean this off so the top surface of the newel post is flat.

Pin-Top newels are used in an over-the-post system where your handrail appears to have a continuous run, or just at the bottom with a volute, turn-out or start easing with cap. There is always some sort of handrail fitting that sits over a pin-top newel.

How do you fix a newel post?
Using a hammer, tap your screw until there is roughly 30mm of it left stuck proud of the newel base. Then use a screwdriver to tighten the screw down into the newel base. Don’t be afraid of taking the screw out and trying again a few times to insert a new plug and get the screw to hold tight—these don’t always bite!
How are newel posts fixed?
Using a screw with the rawl plug will help ensure the newel post is fixed securely to the floor. Using a similar method to fixing a newel base to a wooden floor (see above), drill downward at a 45-degree angle to the post with a countersink drill bit.
