Carex is a vast genus of more than 2,000 species of grass-like plants in the family Cyperaceae, commonly known as sedges (or seg, in older books).

The genus now contains around 2000 species, and an entire branch of botany called caricology is devoted to the study of Carex. It is one of the largest genera of vascular plants and can be found in almost every ecosystem worldwide.

Carex plants generally form arching mounds from 10 inches to more than 3 feet tall. Sedges perform great as container plants too but are less tolerant of moisture swings than other grasses… being too wet or too dry adversely affects Carex health.

For example, plants with a recommended spacing of 24″ apart should be spaced at least 12″ from the edge of the bed (or surfaced area) to the center of the plant. After setting out the first row, stagger the plants on the second row and so on until the space is filled.
