Can I replace a 5-speed freewheel with 6-speed?
5-Speed to 6- or 7-Speed Hubs originally intended for 5-speed freewheels can be converted to use 6- or 7-speed freewheels. You will generally need to add a few spacer washers to the right side of the axle, building it up far enought that the cone locknut can reach the frame dropout through the wider freewheel body.
Does Shimano make freewheel?
Shimano continued to make thread-on freewheels for the lower end market, in 5- and 6-speed versions. After a few years, once the cassette Freehub was well established for higher end bikes, they even started making 7-speed freewheels.
Are freewheels interchangeable?
No, freewheels are completely different from the cassette / free hub system and are not interchangeable. A freewheel includes the ratchet mechanism that allows the sprockets to rotate backwards as well as the sprockets themselves, and threads into the hub.
Which is better cassette or freewheel?
Which is better? A freewheel has a lower number of gears so is better suited for casual riders who don’t require the larger selection of gears available from a cassette. It’s much better coasting, allowing you to rest your legs, and if done correctly, can be useful when climbing hills and easier coming down them.
Are all Shimano Freehubs compatible?

What is Shimano freehub?
The freehub is an extension of the right-hand side of the rear wheel’s hub. It contains a system that engages with the wheel when you’re pedalling, to propel you forward, and which disengages when you stop pedalling so that the wheel continues to turn without the gears and pedals turning.
Is suntour derailleur good?
