- Shoot for the fish’s head area with your gaff, and try to avoid the middle of the fillet.
- Never aim for the tail when gaffing a fish.
- Never “stab” at the fish.
- Never rush the gaff job.
- Reach “Over” the fish when gaffing.
Does Gaffing hurt fish?
Gaffing almost always means killing a fish. If you are unsure about the size of the fish or if there is any way to boat and/or release the fish without that gaff, do it.
How do you gaff fish?
Always gaff fish behind the leader over the top of the fish as they make their turn toward the boat. Head shots are nice, and they do save some fillet, but when the big one is there and ready it’s always best to gaff in the meaty forward-shoulder area behind the vulnerable leader.
How do you sharpen a gaff hook?
I put it in the vice and hand file it with fine metal file. I want the tip sharp enough that it scrapes my finger nail when I lightly drag it across the tip. I file towards the point evenly around it. My other two gaffs are triangular points; they are easier to sharpen.

What is a gaffing hook?

Is it safe to tuck your testes?
Tucking does have some risks. These include urinary tract infections, problems with urine flow and twisting or inflammation in the testicles. If you have any of these problems, stop tucking until you can talk with your doctor.
