How important is it that we raise public awareness about FASD?
Because FASD is entirely preventable, even one case is too many. By raising awareness about the consequences of prenatal alcohol exposure, we hope to dispel common misperceptions about alcohol use during pregnancy.
Can FASD cause SIDS?
Alcohol use during pregnancy can cause birth defects and developmental disabilities collectively known as fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASDs). It is also associated with an increased risk for other pregnancy problems, such as miscarriage, stillbirth, preterm birth, and sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS).
How do you treat fetal alcohol syndrome in adults?
Some of the alternative treatments used for people with FASDs include:
- Biofeedback.
- Auditory training.
- Relaxation therapy, visual imagery, and meditation (especially for sleep problems and anxiety)
- Creative art therapy.
- Yoga and exercise.
- Acupuncture and acupressure.
- Massage, Reiki, and energy healing.
How is FASD prevented?
However, the only way to prevent FAS is to avoid drinking any alcoholic beverages during pregnancy. It’s also recommended that you not drink alcohol if you’re sexually active and not using effective birth control. It can take four to six weeks before you know you’re pregnant.
Is FASD on the autism spectrum?
People with FASD often have a number of autistic-like traits. Sometimes people with FASD are also on the autism spectrum; one study found that as many as 72% of children with fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) have autism.
Can someone with FAS live a normal life?
Results: The life expectancy at birth of people with FAS was 34 years (95% confidence interval: 31 to 37 years), which was about 42% of that of the general population.
How do you help a child with FASD?
Strategies
- Reward good behaviour: Praise your child for achievements.
- Look for strengths: Emphasize your child’s strengths and abilities as often as you can.
- Use a safe place: Give your child a place to calm down, express anger or frustration where he is not penalized for acting out.
How do you calm a child with FASD?
Use a safe place: Give your child a place to calm down, express anger or frustration where he is not penalized for acting out. Create a phrase to cue your child to use this space, e.g., “Take space”. Be consistent: Use firm limits and clear consequences for all misbehaviour.
At what age is FASD diagnosed?
In the most severely affected children, FAS can be diagnosed at birth, however, the characteristic physical features are most pronounced between eight months and eight years of age.
Does fetal alcohol syndrome go away?
There is no cure for FASDs, but research shows that early intervention treatment services can improve a child’s development. Early intervention services help children from birth to 3 years of age (36 months) learn important skills. Services include therapy to help the child talk, walk, and interact with others.
