What does the National Citizen Service do?
NCS is a space where young people can become world ready and work ready, and raise their voice to make a positive difference together. Where they can explore who they are and who they want to be, with no fear of judgement or failure.
Who can apply for the National Citizen Service programme?
NCS is designed for 16 and 17 year olds. However, you can go on programme as a 15-year-old, as long as you turn 16 on or by 31 August of the year you apply for.

How long is the national citizen service?
In your first week, during the Be Epic and Live Life phases, you’ll come together as a team and learn new life skills, whilst staying away from home for four nights and five days.
Does NCS count as work experience?
Does NCS count as work experience? Technically speaking, no. But it’ll still boost your CV since you develop so many skills by doing it, which will make you more attractive to employers.
What do you do during NCS?
Working as part of a team, they have the chance to take part in outdoor activities such as mountaineering, canoeing and abseiling, and to undertake personal and social development. They also design and deliver their own project in their local community, working with other young people to improve the area they live in.

Almost 600,000 young people have taken part in NCS to date.
Why is NCS good for your CV?
NCS is a positive experience, which will imbue you with lifelong skills. You’ll learn how to be a better communicator and your leadership and interpersonal skills will improve. All of these are vital in the workplace. And when employers ask you what makes you stand out, then you always have NCS to fall back on.

Independent evaluation shows that NCS develops important skills, increases aspirations and wellbeing, mixes people from different backgrounds and increases community involvement. And it shows that meeting new friends and doing good feels good: over 90% who took part would recommend NCS to their friends.
What do you need for NCS?
The centres provide clothing and equipment for all activities (waterproof trousers, jackets, safety gear etc). Electrical sockets may be limited at the centres, so electrical items are discouraged. You will need to bring your own bedding. Plastic cutlery, plate, bowl and mug.
Should I put NCS on my CV?
Why is it important that I include NCS in my CV/UCAS? Long story short, employers and universities love NCS. They are going to be immediately drawn to people who have extra curricular experience because of the attributes that it shows about you.

A – Yes. NCS is delivered by a network of highly experienced staff from charities and youth and community organisations. DBS checked and trained to the highest standard, all activities are overseen by fully-qualified professional instructors.
Can you put NCS on your CV?
(And hey, just so you know…even though NCS has been different this year and you won’t be able to talk about it in the traditional sense, volunteering and social action (that you can do through Keep Doing Good!) is impressive on your CV, and can give you loads of transferable skills like – teamwork, leadership.
Does NCS shower?
We run a wide range of activities that will challenge, stimulate and inspire the young people taking part on the NCS programme. At both locations we provide bell tent accommodation, there are shower and toilet blocks, breakfast, packed lunch and a hot dinner are all provided.
